Do you know that Rs 26497 Cr is lying unclaimed in Inactive EPFO a/c’s. As per rough estimate Rs 22000 is lying unclaimed in PPF (Public Provided Fund) a/c’s. In short, out of total unclaimed wealth of Rs 64000 Cr, approx Rs 48497 Cr is contributed by “Savings for Retirement Planning” which is 3/4th of unclaimed wealth. EPFO has addressed this issue by launching UAN (Universal Account No) last year so that it is convenient for members to transfer EPF account in case of job change. It is quite unfortunate that we keep accumulating hard earned money during years of service but it is lying unclaimed. There can be multiple reasons for same. From my family experience and my own experience, i must say that job hopping is primary contributor to this corpus.
The best example i can think is of my brother. He is also one of the contributor to this enormous wealth. He changed 7 jobs in last 10 years and never bothered to withdraw or transfer the money from EPFO account. When i asked him about this lax approach, he replied that entire process was tedious and cumbersome. To be very honest, process of withdrawal was more convenient and faster compared to transfer. Though i never suggest to withdraw from PPF (Public Provident Fund) / EPFO account. I can share some of the common problems faced by the employees.
(a) I shifted from Company A to Company B in year 2006. Immediately after joining i placed request for transfer of EPF money from Company A to Company B. It took 18 months for company A to issue cheque to company B. Best part is after receiving cheque, Company B could not encashed it for 6 months and cheque’s validity expired. it was back to square one. Finally i withdrew the amount as there was no other option.
(b) In my brothers case, he shifted from company X to company Y. He left company Y after 2 years and transfer was still in process. Finally he stopped following up with Compnay Y / EPFO after 3 years.
(c) Mostly transfer of EPF money require follow up with HR department of previous company. In most of the cases, employee lose track of HR or HR leave the job till transfer is completed therefore money remains unclaimed.
(d) Lastly, in few cases i observed that due to lack of proper information employee was not aware how to transfer / withdraw specially in case of small / Medium organizations.
Another misconception among members is that they are receiving interest on inactive EPFO a/c and money is safe so they will transfer or withdraw when they will have time or require the same. Not many people are aware that if EPFO account do not receive any contribution continuously for 36 months then account is declared inactive/inoperative and future interest is not credited.
The best part in my brother’s case is that he is using same email id from last 10 years. Quite surprisingly, recently he received email from EPFO to withdraw money from his inactive EPFO a/c’s or transfer to his active account. He requested me to help in this process. When i did some research, i observed that EPFO is carrying out special drive to identify beneficiaries of inactive EPFO account, which is commendable. On EPFO website, i saw message informing members regarding online facility to trace “Inoperative Accounts”. It ask members to register with helpdesk so that EPFO can take further steps to settle such accounts.
Only catch is that member should know some basic details of inactive EPFO Account. If you have don’t have EPF No. then you may pull out your old salary slips as EPF No. is mentioned on the salary slips. Otherwise you can request your past employer to share the same. This information can be easily traceable. After tracing your EPF No’s, you may follow below mentioned steps to withdraw or transfer EPF money.
How to Withdraw Money from Inactive EPFO a/c
Step 1: Visit www.epfindia.com
Step 2: Under “For Employees” section click on “Inoperative A/c Helpdesk“.
Step 3: You will be redirected to “http://59.180.231.56/INOPHelpDesk/” in new window. It takes lot of efforts to open the link as it is mostly not available during weekends. I was lucky 2nd day.
Step 4: On this page, you will find 3 options (a) User Manual for first time user (b) First Time User Click Here to Proceed and (c) Existing User Click here to view Status. You can select option (a) i.e. First Time User Click Here to Proceed.
Step 5: On next page, Submit your problem details in Problem Description. Basically in this section you can explain to EPFO, the reason/s why your EPFO account is inactive or any problem faced by you in transferring or withdrawal.
Step 6: On next page, you have to provide employment details to EPFO i.e. PF No, Companies Name, Address etc. Please note that all details are not mandatory. Whatever details you know, you may fill as it will be easy for EPFO to trace your account. Click on Next to proceed
Step 7: You can “Enter Personal Details”. Name, Mobile No and Date of Birth are mandatory fields. Again i suggest to provide as many details as you can.
On the bottom of same page, you have to provide KYC details like PAN No, Aadhar No, Bank Account No and IFSC code of the bank. These details are required to process your withdrawal / payment of PF amount. Though these are not mandatory fields but i suggest you to provide the same for faster processing from EPFO office.
Step 8: Please select “Generate PIN“. You will get a pop up on screen “PIN Successfully sent to your mobile”. Please check your mobile for PIN from EPFO
Step 9: Please enter the PIN received through SMS in”Enter PIN” section on same page. To verify, You may click “Verify PIN and Submit“.
Step 10: After successful submission, you will receive SMS with Reference Id for future reference. You will also get “Acknowledgement” on your screen with reference no. You may print the acknowledgement for future reference.
Step 11: To check the status of your request, you may check following link

Step 13: Enter your “Reference No” and “Mobile No” to check the status
Important Points:
1. For each inoperative EPFO account, please fill separate request form
2. Please provide as many details as you can. As i mentioned, you may pull out previous salary slips or contact your previous employers to get all details related to EPFO account.
3. Please provide Email id though it is not mandatory.

1. Now it is not feasible to get bank account no changed. I suggest to submit withdrawal form with your organization and mention correct bank account details.
2. TDS of 10% will be applicable on withdrawal of EPF. 5 year should be of continuous service. You can withdraw after 5 years of last contribution
3. You can withdraw. It will be taxed as income. It will not be tax free.

It depends on efficiency of EPFO and how easily they can track your account. As your accounts are old, In your case it might take some time. You will receive call / mail from EPFO regarding the same. Entire process ideally should be completed within 3 months.

I worked in bangalore for one year in an institute back in 2008 to 2009 and it is almost 6 years now. my account is inactive but I have put all of my details in the registration portal on epf account. I wanted to know is it possible that i can withdraw the money out of my epf account if i go to epf office in bangalore even if my account is inactive. or I should wait for helpdesk answer. because i wanted to be sure if i travel to Bangalore from delhi. I should be able to withdraw it. can it be done online?
I suggest you to await a revert from help-desk. Also you need not travel as you can place withdrawal request through HR department of your previous employer.

I have 04 yrs old inoperative account. This Employer(A) is not willing to help, as worked there for 03 months only. But unfortunately my pervious Employer(B)’s PF fund accumulated with this Employers(A) PF account. It seems to be dead end. You may check if you ever received annual EPF statement from EPFO with correct EPFO no. Only solution is to get the details from the EPFO office where the EPF was deposited by your company.

Normally the transfer takes 2-3 months. You cannot check online status.

You cannot withdraw as withdrawal is possible only in case of 2 months or more unemployment period after you leave the job.

Our PF agent is saying that the claim for withdrawal is under process – but am hearing this since 2013-2014! I have done the above procedure on the Inoperative Account Helpdesk and am awaiting revert. I have a UAN from my latest employer – is it possible to link an “Inoperative Account” to an Existing UAN in order to be able to know the balance in the account. Thanks in advance for your help!

After this I added my previous member id in UAN. Both of my member ids are reflecting in my UAN. However, I have not been able to download my pf passbook for last 3-4 months. I have tried using the Uan helpdesk but I am unable to raise the request. Somehow, OTP is not generating on my mobile no. I have also sent an email to Uan helpdes id but it directs me to raise request on uan helpdesk only.
Could you please guide me how can I get my PF passbook or whom to contact in EPF department.

Firstly, i request not to share any personal info on public forum. I have deleted the same. Ref to your query, the EPFO system face technical issue on and off. If all the accounts are visible then you need not worry. You can wait for 7-10 days and try again. There is a possibility that records are getting updated.

You may ask for your PF statement. Discontinuation of job or service break does not impact your PF accumulation.

And we have applied UAN number and activated the same, but there also no option to withdrawal. If you know the procedure of Withdrawal please share it.
It seems you have not provided bank account details as i mentioned in point no 7. You need to fill the form again for withdrawal/payment.

To answer your query, you should wait for 6-9 months before any action on inoperative account by EPFO. You will definitely get revert from inoperative account help desk.

1) Company has settle my dues at the time of resignation.& giving reliving letter.
2) Even given the EPF withdrawal forms set by HR people by post to mine resi. Address.
3) But Somehow I could not apply for Withdrawal of fund From EPF by end of 2012.
4) I written to co. HR Dept. during 2013-2015 3- 4 times by sending the EPF withdrawal form set,

I received No reply from company neither any redemption amount in my bank a/c .

You can check your EPF status from EPFO website (Chennai). In all probability it will be inactive. In this case, You may follow the steps shared by me in the post on this page to withdraw EPF from in active EPFO account.
Sir , Is it like if we have an inoperable PF account and if we want to withdraw the amount , we need not have to contact the company/establishment anymore to get back the amount in our bank account.

I raised 2 requests of my 2 inoperative accounts, one from 2004 and another from 2007. However, both were closed saying that the PF account numbers are correct. I am not sure what this means, as the transfer from both these accounts have not happened yet. Could you please advise on how can I go ahead with withdrawing teh amount from these accounts ? There is a possibility that these accounts are active as this facility is only for inactive EPF accounts. You may approach HR Manager of your previous companies for withdrawal. If you have UAN then you may transfer/link these accounts to UAN and request can be submitted to existing employer for transfer.

As per new rule my employer says that my basic is greater than 15000 and because my immediate previous employer was not giving me PF so i am not eligible for PF in this organisation also . is it write? Although i have not withdrawn PF from my first employer and the account is inoperative .I have follow the steps explained by you thanks a ton . But please do reply as per new norms dated sep 2014 if new employee is not an active member and basic exceeds 15000 then employer its the discretion of the employer to give PF or not.
You are eligible for PF. Being an active/inactive member has NO relevance. Your employer can open your new EPF account.

Hi sir myself Vikas Gupta bearing pf acc/num: KN/BN/34272/615590…from day 1 i am not able to see my pf balance.this pf acc was created on 09/05/2013 then i worked for adeccco india pvt ltd for next seven month then i left the job. Then i requested for the withdrawl and sent all the necessary document asked by the employer but still i ve nt recived my pf. Then they said to generate UAN number and send the copy, i did the same and forwarded, then also i didnt get it.
Now when i am checking the details by entering uan number the status is exempted trust under balance status.I logged a complaint in inoperative account today only. Please suggest that will i get my pf money or not. And if not what steps should be taken by me in order to get the same.

In case of trust, you can directly approach the PF Trust for withdrawal. Moreover it seems your PF is not linked to UAN. Therefore, In my opinion EPFO cannot do much in this regard.
This was reply from inoperative heldesk but my company got closed so how do i get employer attestation “you can apply form19 and form10c along bank pass book xerox with employer attestation, photocopy of pan card and form 15G with self attestation and with UAN card”
You have not mentioned whether you have UAN or not & currently you are working as salaried or not.

You have to fill and submit the form in the EPFO office in whose jurisdiction your company’s EPFO account is operated. You may need your companies attestation. You can submit withdrawal form with your company and they will process the same.

This is not at all related to what I asked. I am not working any more in India. I tried contacting my old employer . He asked me to fill couple of forms along with copy of UAN . But, I didnt have UAN sInce I worked like 4 years back. Do I still need to submit UAN for PF withdrawl through my previous company ??? I am not even working in India, can I still get this UAN number ???
It seems the department has not understood your query. As you are not contributing to EPF and currently outside India therefore in my opinion UAN is not applicable/required in your case. You may fill and submit the PF withdrawal form with your past employer and in the reason for withdrawal mention that you are NRI and is not working in India. You will receive your PF.

Firstly you need to check whether your account is active or inactive. In all probability, it will be inactive then you can follow the steps shared by me.
And what would be the easiest way to check if the account it inactive or active?
I used the “know your balance” facility on epf portal and i was able to get my current balance through SMS. The SMS shows my EE and ER amount on 29-06-2015 and also says “accounts updated upto 31-03-2015”. Does this mean that account is inactive?

You may check with your last employer. In all probability, it will be inactive only.

I have three inoperative PF accounts which I have linked to my UAN. As of now, I am self employed.
Which of the option is better and faster:
A)I transfer any two inoperative accounts to one account and withdraw from that account. (I have checked the eligibility)
OR
B) I withdraw separately form each account
Also, if I do not wish to involve the past company/ies for the withdrawal process, what is the procedure and what is the time frame in which I shall receive the amount?

You have not mentioned whether you have any plans to join corporate sector again or not.
No plans to join corporate sector as ‘Employee’ as i have crossed the retirement age.
Option A looks good.

Try in different web browser or laptop/desktop. Checked whether the popup and cookies are allowed for the site or not.

Can we place a transfer request for Inoperative account? I have placed the online transfer request for my inopeartive account to my current account thorugh normal online transfer request and not thorugh the inoperative help desk? is it fine?
It is okay..Let them revert. If it is rejected then you may route your request through inoperative help desk.

It depends on the information shared by you and how easily EPFO can trace your inoperative EPFO account. All the best :)
Thanks a lot – very helpful post. I have raised a query recently and hope that it gets actioned soon. Luckily i had a letter from the inactive PF account (from days when it was active) with all relevant details, so i am hoping it will be easy for EPFO to trace the establishment. My name is Deepak and i have a question in reference to withdrawing the inoperative pf from 2 companies that I have worked earlier.
I got a toll free numberfor Inoperative helpdesk (1-800-118-005) and I called them today. As they picked the call, they took my name, mobile number and UAN number.
I told them that I have entered the details through online portal and I am able to see the messages by logging to http://59.180.231.60:9091/DashboardHelpdeskNew/
Wanted to know when I will be getting the amount into my account.
I spoke to a lady from pf office and she said there is no such online to withdraw inoperative pf and we need to fill
Form 19, Form 10C and Form 15G and we need to submit PAN card, Aadhar card, UAN card and a cancel check.
1) If the company exists – we need to go to the employer and get the signature
2) If the company is shut down – we need to take the sign from the bank manager.
I have 2 reference numbers for 2 companies which I have worked earlier and both the pfs accounts are inoperative as of now.
Could you please give me a clear picture if I need to submit the documents by going to the company or Bank.. OR shall I wait since I already submitted through online for which I have reference numbers.

Withdrawal from inoperative EPFO account is a separate process. I suggest you to follow the steps as i shared in my post and then wait for revert from EPFO helpdesk.

I have resigned from service after working for more than 15 yrs. I was regular contributor to EPF account. I have worked till 31 dec 2011. I have rejoined service with EPF contribution on 23 apr 2013 . But company did not give me EPF account slip. I have resigned from this second employer as well on 30-oct 2014. I am not working any more.
EPF account was not linked. In the process the old EPF account became inoperative. I have been sending mails to second employer to give me EPF account details and slip. 3 letters didn,t get any response from second employer.
How can the account be linked?
whether I am eligible for interest on both the EPF accounts if linked up ( with retrospective effect), as my account shall not be treated as inoperative as there was no fault of mine.

i followed the process as mention by you, now i received my reference no. now they are asking for form 10c, and form 19 to withdraw the amount (can i produce these form through online mode?) and form 13 to transfer the pf account, they want it to be attested by the employer
2nd thing can i see the amount in any inoperative account?

1. You have to follow the instruction of EPFO
2. It depends on the life of inoperative account. If it is recent then you can check.
